Crane Builders could use some speed, in every sense of the word. While their broody drone, ala the Velvets and Smiths, is often brilliant, a good rocker or vocal with the knife pulled away from the throat would help. Not that this is a humorless record, but taken in one dose it can be a major buzzkill. Why is it that no brooding UK bands outside of Radiohead or Jesus & Mary Chain has a sense of humor? Aside from the suicidal, I would think that anyone trying to be morbid 24/7 would eventually wake up one day and laugh at themselves for being so fey. Hey, the world does suck, but part of the reason it does is you. “Public Space” and “Soap Opera Rant” do rock a bit, in a Feelies kind of way, but more vocal variation would be nice. There are 20 tracks here, one attitude. That makes this record a good friend for the times you got none, but otherwise is best taken in small doses.
