Can anyone tell me a band, other than Metallica who catches more s*it from their fans OTHER THAN Weezer? I swear man, no matter what this band does, there are always people who go It will never be as good as ________ whatever, usually the Blue Album. I kinda wish those two would tour together and call it the *iss Off Tour 2010, I mean think of all of the people fans if you must call them that, that would crap themselves at the mere IDEA of them touring together. Ahhh dreams, Only In Dreams&
The album kicks off with the ultra poppy and hooky Beverly Hills that has a a bllllllllazin talk box solo. I really love the lyrics too. Trite as it sounds, hes appealing to a lot of people with it. The cynics, snobs and metal and punk fans call this the lowest common denominator that their precious underground band would never, EVAR go for. But the fact remains, a lot of people can relate to the concept of the song because a lot of people watch shows like MTV Cribs and Mancave, to see people with all of the cool toys they could never have.
Perfect Situation is the classic Weezer track on here, in my (not so) humble opinion. Why is that? Just listen to the chorus. Hes taken his Whoas and Oooohs and turned them into the chorus in a very VERY catchy way. It really is a great one to sing along too. The next track This Is Such A Pity is catchy but not too catchy. Its a nice attempt at a hook, but the overall feel to me is that its bordering on disco and, as we all know, disco SUCKS. We come to my favorite track on the album next. Hold Me at the right moment can bring a near 300lb manly man like me to tears. And Im not even joking. This song is the epitome of what is emo music, and you know what? I LOVE IT!!!
Now instead of continuing chronologically, Id like to address this Freak Me Out, Haunt You Every Day, Pardon Me, and The Other Way situation. I really cant say much good about any of these songs because it seems to me they are pretty much album filler. And I really think thats not a way to END such a strong album other wise. Rivers gets into his classic kinda chorus on Haunt You but really the rest of it just kinda runs together. I will say this though, Rivers shows that there are only so many ways you can use the harmonics of the guitar because during Freak Me Out I kept thinking of Linkin Park and the way they do pretty much the same thing.
I truly believe My Best Friend should have been the final track of the album for a few reasons. One, nothing that came after it on the album had a snowballs chance in hell of following it musically. And the song just kind of sounds like a song youd hear over the closing credits of a hip buddy film. It just has that vibe too it, and for the record, that is a GOOD THING. The Damage In Your Heart speaks to me a little personally so I will tell you I am predisposed to like the song on that basis alone. Rivers works the Linkin Park harmonics again on this one.
The closest thing this album has to a balls out rocker is We Are All On Drugs. Sure, it has a lot of deep, muted guitars, but hey its Weezer, well take heavy where we can get it. Actually the muted sound kinda reminds me of Hash Pipe which, hey if youre gonna copy a sound, why not that one? The chorus is a lot more catchy than your standard sing along. I really wish these guys were coming with Blink when they hit my hometown. But Noooooooooooooooooooooo we get Fall Out Girl&..
