A rarities album from Bright Eyes? Uh oh! It's hard not to expect a bunch of under-developed, whiny songs and covers from Mr. Conor Oberst on this one, but Noise Floor, for the most part, delivers the goods in a way that most "rarity albums" do not. For instance, the refined "Happy Birthday to Me (Feb 15th)" offers a much better version of a song that proves to be more catchy and moving than it originally appeared to be when released on A Collection of Songs. Other highlights include hard to find tracks such as "I Will Be Grateful for This Day," a song that would've fit well on Digital Ash in a Digital Urn, and "Drunk Kid Catholic," which is led by piano and ends with a powerful chorus proclaiming "the drunk kids, the catholics, they're all about the same." Though, as to be expected with any compilation release, there is a lot missing from the normal Bright Eyes album, namely: cohesiveness. Saddle-Creek did do a tremendous job trying to create a cohesive album here (it even begins with an arduous instrumental track, which Bright Eyes has gained notoriety for over the years), but there is something missing when these types of albums are made, which cannot be rectified but merely has to be overlooked by the listener. Therefore, this album is recommended only for the most devoted fans; it is a decent release and the art-work inside is appealing: it gives a short biography of each song, something that the devoted Bright Eyes and Conor Oberst fans are sure to want in their collections. For the others, look towards one of Bright Eyes’ two 2005 releases, then try out this rarities album.
