This EP gives a little but tasty sense of what is coming up in 2007 when the full-length is released. Slim knows his country and rockabilly roots, but is no nostalgia act. Nor does his humor undermine the menace and grace of these five songs. You’ve probably heard of him, on Comedy Central’s Invite Them Up, or on tour with Lucero or Violent Femmes Like a cross between the Rev. Horton Heat and Billy Childish, Slim is dead serious about his fun, and manages to repel as he amuses, especially on “English Tea” and “Restless.” “Under The Olive Tree” is even beautiful. This is a great preview of what at least now will be his best work yet. Certainly this EP has enough power and gritty laughs to make a good core for a great record.
