Los Amigos Invisibles has been one of the more consistent Latin dance bands going in the past decade with Arepa 3000: A Venezuelan Journey Into Space standing out as their best album. Unfortunately that remains true after listening to Super Pop Venezuela. Not that this album is bad, by any measure, it just doesn't quite have the diversity and dexterity that Arepa 3000 had. Dimitri From Paris takes the production boards for Super Pop and does a good job too. This album takes a look at where Venezuelan music has come from. The album starts off cheesier than you can imagine with "Miss Venezuela". I could have done without this song, especially ushering me into a new album from these guys. But The Amigos move back into classy territory with "All Day Today", one of those tracks that you would love to go away to some tropical place and come back with in your head. It's got the sing-along chorus that sticks in your head. Some of the songs are rooted in a more classic Latin vibe than others, like "Amar Es Algo Mas". But, as is usual for Los Amigos Invisibles, they manage to mix traditional and modern fairly easily. I found that Super Pop Venezuela is a strong release but it doesn't quite stand up to Arepa 3000. Regardless, there is room for a couple Los Amigos Invisibles albums on your shelf.
