I would have to say that next to the infallible Fugazi, Q and not U are my favorite Dischord artist. Different Damage is their follow-up to the amazing (and strangely named) No Kill, No Beep Beep and they prove that they are a band that is bound and determined to stay relevant to the post-rock punk scene. The three members (John Davis, Harris Klahr and Chris Richards) have been playing together since 1998 and the aformentioned album was released in 2000. Label head Ian MacKaye and Don Zientara are responsible for the fine recording quality that you find on Different Damage as well as Beep Beep. While Q and not U have a lot in common with Fugazi, they tend to be a little more straightforward with the way they rock. There are complicated moments in which the band navigate through some tricky time signature changes but they always make it out and pick up the pace again. The band is forward thinking and willing to try new things that haven’t been well documented yet. Q and not U are definitely one of the highlights on Dischord. Be sure to check them out.
