This is one Swedish band that doesn’t dabble with the devil. Unless you think the devil is Roger Waters, circa 1969 Mixing straight on cock rock with a little bit of drone and Can-esque noodling, 1999 wade through the filed they’ve created for themselves pretty deftly. This rocks, then doesn’t, then doesn’t care, then rocks again. Often times, as on “Lust Vampire” and “Hated People”, the prog-rock tendencies teeter close to the trite, but the tunes are saved by the band’s love of a well-placed gorilla-sized riff. And this is a band that can turn it up to 11 with no irony whatsoever. For a debut, this is chock full of ideas that would last a career for lesser bands. 1999 seem to want all in its wake, and often times on this record (check out “Karma”) they come close to taking it. They could disappear, or be a biggie, who knows?
