The myspace talent magnet has, for a long time, been drawn towards this Queen Adreena sparring with the Smashing Pumpkins, refereed by Throwing Muses outlet of youthful release. It is of little surprise that Steve Lamacq’s attention has been caught by the wide net of Jess Bell’s vocal punch and the satiating guitar and percussion grinds cast out in each track, most prominent in opener ‘You’re Not The One’. This offering shows The Subways that passion, tension and rawness work well if they are allowed to occur naturally and are not strangled out.
The way in which Fran Robinson’s rhythmic percussion pulse circulates from the intro to ‘Gagged & Bound’, shunting into the gnarly and provocative vocal snap of Bell, shows maturity and song-building insight. Illuminating an innate ability and feel for music of this ilk, featuring a skill that cannot simply be picked up from watching Red Hot Chili Peppers’ videos, as the rampaging instrumentals contrast with the stern and measured vocals to give the offering completeness. The Tommys create moody and rootsy rock with a self-deprecating touch to give some humanity to matters, something that is at its sharpest in the bluesy ‘Freakshow’. This seminal Crewe outfit has certainly made a departure from the squalid and often squeamish platform of modern rock.
