It's been a while since I touched base with Willard Grant Conspiracy. I lost my connection when they left Rykodisc/Slow River. But it looks like they went on without me. As is usually with these more artsy bands like Nick Cave and Tindersticks, they are much bigger in Europe, hence Let It Roll already being released in Europe. After the first listen the Nick Cave comparison comes roaring back to me. I haven't listened to any of Willard Grant Conspiracy's albums for quite some time but do recall the huge Cave similarity with Robert Fisher's wonderful voice. The title track really showcases Robert's sometimes subdued voice in favor of a more operatic one. Some of the tracks even become hypnotic like "Mary Of The Angels". I still respect this band and think that they do this somewhat gothic americana quite well. I found that some of the songs droned on for much too long. That would be my only complaint about Let It Roll. Fisher has a sexy strong voice that really suits this music. Steve Wynn supplies some help, both vocally and guitar-wise, on the lovely "Flying Low". Another treat on here is the cover of Bob Dylan's "Ballad Of A Thin Man", which Robert's vocals are a treat on. A Willard Grant Conspiracy and Lambchop tour is in order.
