I hate it when I'm right but when I looked at the cover of The Offramps I had second thoughts about even throwing this disc in my player. The cover has the three members of this Detroit/Ann Arbor band in a sepia tone with their name and album hovering over their heads. It might be different if they weren't so ordinary looking or doing something a little more spectacular. Anyway, the music on their very first long player isn't really bad, per se. In fact it's pretty solid power pop but the thing is these songs seem to lack the hooks that make me want to listen to it over and over again. Also, the production seems to be lacking. On tracks like "Chapter Eight" they are almost there. I feel a little bit of a Wilco or Uncle Tupelo feel to this song (and others). It seems that the Offramps have huge hearts and want to make this work but it just seems to lack something. There are some people, those that like rootsier power pop, that might like The Offramps. I just couldn't get into it.
