Impressive, but nowhere near the mark set by Lateralus. 10,000 Days is a mostly different beast, sure, but this album feels like some cross-breeding of Tool and Mynard's (that's my loving nickname for the fella) other outfit, APC (A Perfect Circle). Maybe that's just me, though...but I think not. The poppiness of "Vicarious" and "The Pot" turns me off for two reasons; think back to Tool's hits like "Schism" and "Sober"; they never took it as far as some songs here do. And the other reason? They don't fit. This album is doomed (and saved, ironically enough) by the grand scope of the "Wings" duology, along with the closing four tracks of the album, "Rosetta Stoned" through creepy "Faaip De Oiad"-ish finale "Viginti Tres" All of these songs represent a large scale and more definitive attention towards all those little intricate and eclectic moments Tool is most well-known for. There's nothing bonding these two separate trains of thought together; they inevitably fly off the rails and ruin the cohesive feel all Tool albums before it have had, in varying degrees. Despite that, most of the above-mentioned tracks are great pieces of prog-rock/metal with some industrial edge, the Tool sound is here in spades and that should please most fans. Still, I don't believe I'm alone in thinking that 10,000 Days is a mish-mash effort, a nice collection of songs but with nothing to tie them together.

The album is nothing but a dissapointment. Tool has so much talent, but this proves that even bands who make great music can have an off day. The reality is, how can you follow AEnima and Laterallus? Nevertheless, Tool should have tried harder. I classify this album as one of the most regretable purchases I've ever made.
I made an attempt to listen to the album one last time before reviewing, trying to give it the benefit of the doubt, but after doing so, I plugged the ipod into my computer, called up itunes, and deleted the entire thing. I doing ever want to hear it again.
Since I really don't have much to go on because it's no longer in my ipod, I took the liberty of looking up the tracklist online. Vicarious is at least tolerable. The pot is at least tolerable. The only thing that made them tolerable was the fact that they were played endlessly on the radio and once that happens, the exposure makes the fact that the songs were "hits" impossible to ignore. Jambi should have joined these songs on the radio.
Rosetta Stoned seems like it was written by Busta Rhymes. Lost Keys should be removed from existance. Wings for marie (pt 1) has no part 2. Before you come at me with "10000 days" was part 2 to wings for marie, let me just say that if you're going to divide 2 songs with a part 1 and part 2, don't get drunk and name them different songs. Pink Floyd didn't do it.
The entire album is boring, and has no thought to it, no transition. To give the album a fair shot, I caught Tool on the 10000 days tour. Having seen Tool on the Sober tour and considering it one of the most intense concerts I've ever seen, I left the show early after Maynard left the stage becuase someone threw a quarter at him and just let his band take the stage for the rest of the night. Putting together a show, especially if you're Tool, shouldn't be too difficult to make it legendary. Once again, Tool and the 10000 days tour showed that this album was just a trainwreck. The album (and concert for that matter) is/was just droning 3 minute drawn out one note solos using a wah pedal, distortion and a whammy bar. They could have done the world a favor by not touring, and just letting Maynard concentrate on APC.
It's too bad Maynard didn't consult with Metallica on how to write and produce an album of songs over 6 minutes long. The album has 3 good songs out of 11. Two of those songs stick out in my head only because of their radio play. And what's up with the whispering whiney vocals? I won't buy another album or attend another Tool concert. Then again, it can't get much worse than this album. Even the lyrics are boring; "Daylight Dims cold florecent...Leaving unpleasant life...am I a center of these ghosts tonight?"...Maynard, you've been listening to too much goth. Go back to doing something meaningful and stop dissapointing your fans.

Tool were obviously very pleased with the critical acclaim they received for their previous album, "Lateralus". So much so that they decided to do it again only this time they called it "10,000 Days". Esoteric subject matter - check: key of D - check: odd time signatures in place - check: most songs over six minutes long - check. Right, thats another Tool album complete and ready to go to the shops.

These guys are not incompetent musicians. In fact, they are quite talented. Danny Carey is an excellent drummer for one thing, but Tool have combined their influences well - Black Sabbath meets King Crimson. Now the former are, or is it 'were' now, a fine band. But King Crimson have always bored me to tears. They are just another example of the pretentious, self-indulgent bloated prog rockers whom I just love to hate. They are about as far removed from Black Sabbath as you can get, and that Tool have managed to combine the two is an achievement in itself.

But seriously, once you have achieved, you have to do something with it. "10,000 Days" gets off to a good start with "Vicarious" and the next track, "Jambi" is OK. But the album heads downwards from here. The next track, part one of whatever, is a filler with little to commend it. That is followed up by part two the intention of which is to bore you into submission. OK, I will admit, it is good in places, and had they cut it up, stripped it down and perhaps made two or three separate songs out of it, they might have been good, but as it is, it is just eleven minutes of aural sedative.

Don't get your hopes up either, because later on "Rosetta Stoned" treats us to another eleven minutes of mindcrushing tedium . It sounds almost like something even Pink Floyd would have baulked at doing. And don't forget, you've heard it all before on "Lateralus". I have acquaintences who have listened to this 20 or 30 times in an attempt, by their own admission, to get it. I admire their perseverance but if you ask me it is misplaced. It doesn't take so many listens to realise this album is not a patch on its predcecessors. In fact, it takes less than one listen. Tool ran out of ideas with this one and it shows. Time to pack it in guys.

out of all of every tool cd that tool has released. this is by far my favorite. from "vicarious" the lyrics "i like to watch things die." reminds me so much of the forums i visit for true death. it makes me feel like keenan wrote this song for every person on the ogrish dot com forums. it moves me deeply. the song "jambi" didn't do much for me...but it is still tool. the long ass song "wings" has more meaning to it than i thought. i have heard that keenans mom was in a coma for 10,000 days (dunno if thats true or not) and thats where he came up with the song. "the pot" makes me think bad thoughts....like doing drugs and just doing stupid shit, nonetheless it is still i gr8 song. "rosetta stoned" makes me think of dark insane asylums and lunatics. where the "patients" are tortured daily and the staff are more insane than the "patients". i have seen many homemade videos for this song...each one is almost fitting for this song. in one video is clips from the movie "fire in the sky" just insane! it creeped me out. anyways...this is one kick ass album, i play it every other day...it was 2 times a day for the longest time...almost 8 or 9 months. but i finally remembered "oh yeah! i got other cds too! maybe i should change 'em out once in a while." so, anyone who likes tool is in for a gr8 time listening to this album. i know i do....every single time i play it. enjoy :)
