Riot 99 - Last Train To Nowhere
You want old school punk? Look no further than Toronto’s madmen, Riot 99. Like I’m talking Sex Pistols era. There are some songs that you would swear Johnny Rotten is singing but it’s actually native Aussie Drew. The lead off track is called “Start a Riot with the enigmatic lyrics, “I’m sick of peace and quiet / all we want is riot, riot, riot. That gives you a bit of an idea of where Riot 99 fit in. Slowly but surely, Riot 99 is picking up steam and recognition on the Toronto punk scene. Just last year they were invited to contribute to the Terrors of the Town compilation. They even have a bit of the Dropkick Murphys style sing-along choruses like on “What are they fighting for?. The band chooses an obscure cover to include on Last Train. It’s The Ejected’s “Dirty School Girls. They do a great job on it. Some punk bands just go through the motions and don’t really feel the attitude that needs to go along with it but Riot 99 have that attitude. Drew is a great vocalist that can adapt to a couple of different styles and he has a tight band backing him up. Last Train To Nowhere is actually a pleasure to listen to. Melodies run rampant throughout the album giving it an immediate appeal.
