Samiam - Clumsy
Samiam is one of those indie bands who had a shot at the big leagues and poured their heart and soul into their only major label album, Clumsy. The sad thing was that Samiam was overlooked with this release and ended up getting dropped like a ton of bricks. That was probably the best thing that ever happened to this influential emo-punk band. Looking back on Clumsy you can sense the thought and professionalism that went into the album. The band knew that Atlantic had taken a chance on them and they wanted to provide. And cleverly the band didn't stray far from where they were coming from. Sure, they cleaned up their sound a bit but Clumsy was such an original album that the label had no idea how to market it. The songs are so well written and thoughtful, with intelligent and catchy lyrics, and full of emotion and intensity. The guitars are perfect and Jason Beebout's vocals are superb. The track "Capsized"? sends shivers down my spine every time I listen to the intro, with the softly spoken lyrics and the chunky guitar. Listening to "Bad Day"? it's hard to feel for Jason because the song is so damn bouncy. Some of the lyrical content is depressing but overall Clumsy is a very powerful album that should belong in everyone's rock collection. And Samiam live on with the fantastic Astray album out in 2000.
