This much-awaited debut serves this Montreal band. These eight tracks are supposedly of a piece with the artwork. Both vocalist Chloe Lum and everything-else guy Yannick Desranleau are artists, and run a poster art store; the store’s website claims that through listening to noise and being cleansed by it, they are able to see more images in their heads with which to work. The brutal 12 minute plus “Some Sexual Drawings” would seem to be an ode to that process.

The other seven tracks clock in at about thirteen minutes total, with guitar driven harshness of “Panty Mind” “We Multiply” and “Spit Tastes Like Metal” getting in and getting out quickly to great effect.
The tracks being so short, though, would seem to contradict the overt mention of creative invention.
If noise has been the path to developing a new way of automatic drawing, as they suggest, does it only take 2 minutes to clear the mind, be illumined by images, and sort those that need to be drawn? Possible; there sure are a lot of 15 year olds in cafes who write poems in under a minute and proclaim them to be masterpieces as is.

This isn’t to slap at this record: it is a brutal slab of noise, with ideas and humor often lacking in the genre. But the band does seek attention for itself as one using a discovered process that, to them, is profound, or at least worth crowing about. More vocals, more extended ideas would have helped. Listen to the great record, and take the artsy conceit as you will. Montreal has always loved every one of its ideas.
