Let’s get this straight, Staring Back are a good punk/emo band and have a lot of talent. With that being said, they are falling into the emo trap – putting out the same material without progressing. They aren’t the only ones who have done it though. It seems like when you get pigeon-holed into the “emo arena, you have to stay there and keep doing the same stuff. One band that figured out they can change is The Promise Ring, albeit quite extreme. Staring Back’s debut on Lobster, Many Will Play, showed much promise for this youthful band and I was quite excited to see what they were going to do next. On is just as good as Many Will Play. Maybe even a little cleaner and crisper but Staring Back have now made their first album obsolete by repeating much of the same styles and songwriting finesse. When a band does this (look to Saves The Day for another perfect example) they don’t grow. It’s like treading water. My advice to staring back, you have talent. This is good music but you have already done that. Look forward instead of Staring Back.
