“ Tied To a Mountain” kicks the record off with a lo-fi, Tom Waits easing into a Velvets’ type violin run that settles down into the straight honk-tonk weeper that is “ Oh My Captain.” Toronto native Chad Ross knows how to celebrate his musical heroes, sometimes a bit too well. While his arrangements are arresting, and his lyrics are pretty solid alt-country fare, his phrasing betrays a serious Ryan Adams fetish. Certainly, loving the Whiskeytown-era RA is more interesting than his “I can put out a record a month and don’t you wish you could date models” Adams, Ross struggles here to find his own voice, literally and figuratively. Granted, I’ll take songs like “ Damn Good Friends” and “ Lead Me To Pasture,” but I’d like to be able to trust that once the singer takes me away, he has some ideas of his own to share with me when we’re alone.
