With bands like Jimmy Eat World starting to gain international stardom the sky is the limit with emo style bands. Along comes Student Rick to try and follow suit with an amazing debut entitled Soundtrack for a Generation. I mentioned Jimmy Eat World but Student Rick takes way more influence from The Promise Ring’s Very Emergency album. Their vocal phrasings are very similar but the songs are a bit more powerful in many instances. The foursome comes from Indiana and are bound and determined to make a splash in the commercial rock arena and Soundtrack just might be that album. Some people may feel that Student Rick may be a bit immature but you have to remember that these kids are just barely out of high school. The album has a beautiful sheen to it thanks to the Descendents Bill Stevenson at the boards. In all honesty, Soundtrack for a Generation is one of the greatest debuts I have heard in quite some time even with the high dose of emotion oozing out at every possible moment. Student Rick is tight and very well versed at their instruments and songwriting. Watch for these guys to follow Jimmy Eat World’s fine example.
