There is good reason that you saw Thrice on a lot of top 10 lists last year. This band does the melodic hardcore thing so well that they deserve respect. While The Illusion of Safety is not their first album (Identity Crisis was released in 2001 on Sub City) it is one of the most all round entertaining punk/hardcore discs I have heard recently. The come from Irvine, CA and they have only been playing together for 3 years but they managed to get quite a following and were noticed by Sub City. The band sticks out because of their ability to mix hardcore, punk, metal, and pop into a very listenable amalgam of music. One can't help but notice the guitarist's dexterity on the guitar. Hell, on "Deadbolt" he gets sounding a lot like Iron Maiden. This isn't a bad thing either because that's some fine guitar playing. The production is amazing too but what else would you expect from the skills of Brian McTernan (Hot Water Music, Cave In). Thrice incorporates the dual style vocal of hardcore screams and Bad Religion style melodic singing. Thrice is a complete package that is intense and enjoyable. Watch for them in your area.
