Blackshaw keeps cementing his rep as one of the great acoustic players of our era with this limited release (only 400 or so copies) live EP. These four tracks explore the range of the instrument and the man with the pick (or fingers). His 12 String rings sharp and vibrant here, which is a solid production for a live recording. Blackshaw’s approach has always tended toward the sublime, and on these tracks he stretches and holds notes as if trying to wring out as much color as he is able. He succeeds. With the recent death of John Fahey and the reissue of work by Harry Taussig, instrumental guitar has been much in the spotlight. James Blackshaw deserves some of the credit for that publicity, and for being one of the leaders in this almost mystical genre.
