Most Black metal sounds the same; its threats never seem to live up to their packaging. When it doesn’t settle for the easy slogans or the visual “Boo ”, its power and menace serve as a reminder of what the genre can be, beyond its cartoonish trappings. Growling vocals, whiplash guitar riffs and grave paint are prevalent, but Striborg breathe life and fire, on this release. The opening track, “” with its hypnotic groove, just may be one of the best death metal songs ever.
While that means that naturally the rest of the record does not reach that peak, it is still solid and smart. The seven tracks here are boosted by the inclusion of an obscure 1995 demo, “Tragic Journey Towards The Light.” Even back then, in tunes like “Drowned in Black beauty” and
“Haunted Forest,” you see the ingredients that make “Nefaria” a winner. With an eerie, wall of sound guitar attack and with the bass lines properly placed minimally in the groove, Striborg’s songs both haunt and hurt.
