Spanish Drone-metal band Orthodox explore their themes of dark obsession and local religious myths and fables with power and reverence. Not afraid to step out of the genre, they are alternately bruising and minimalist in their approach. Orthodox is not afraid of being serious about their beleifs, and about exploring them in challenging music.
These six tracks—five originals and a cover of Venom’s “Genocide”—are noisy yet melodic, with lyrics that are serious, but not trite. There are elements of drone, trance and even a primitive free jazz approach on some tracks. In the hands of lesser metal-mavens all this would be a recipe for parody, but Orthodox pull it off with genuine power. Supposedly up next for them is work with Julian Cope; imagine that, a metal band that keeps pushing itself
