Wow, where does one begin on this eclectic album. Let’s just start by saying that Malcom Catto’s solo debut should not be taken lightly. It won’t appeal to everyone but others will undoubtedly go nuts over it. You see, Malcom is a funk vinyl collector and it shows on his cut and paste style of beat manufacturing. Do you consider Malcom a DJ or a producer or a musician or just a fan of many types of music? Considering that he wrote and performed all of the tracks on Popcorn and helped produce it you could call him all of the above and be right on the money. The beats in his songs don’t remain steady throughout. Expect some time shifts all through the album as well as different styles of recording and producing. Some tracks come off completely muddy and raw while others are crisp but very gloomy. This instrumental album shows an artist with lots of ideas even though he may not know exactly what to do with them. Malcom Catto has come a long way since playing in a teenage band with the Breeder’s Josephine Wiggs.
