Sometimes people have good intentions that just fall short of the mark. That's exactly the impression I get from Tacoma Redd . From the opening track, "When I'm Not Around," it becomes apparent that what the press release enclosed with the CD referred to as "powerpop" is what you call imitating the vocals of Rush with the bland style of rock music found on most radio stations today. Lacking the punk-lite edge characteristic of powerpop, Tacoma Redd can't seem to decide just what they want to sound like. While most of the songs on here could probably be confused with Switchfoot b-sides, every single bridge in every single song consists of a guitar solo that, in this context, is a complete nonsequitur. Add to that the occasional heavy metal interlude and even a couple of breakdowns usually found in post-hardcore, and you're left with a collection of sounds that isn't so much eclectic as it is confusing. Maybe if the band could sit down, pick out a few favorite albums, and find a way to fuse the respective sounds of said albums, they could create an interesting, listenable sonic identity. Until then, despite their obvious technical ability, Tacoma Redd just can't seem to find the spot.
