MONO strays further away from their noise roots and deeper into neoclassical on this joint release with fellow Japanese sound manipulator world’s end girlfriend. Deep is a good word here: this is a majestic, somber set of a suite in five parts. That such chamber music can be both meditative and forboding suggest a sense of peace with contradiction, as the title of the record implies.
The record also, by association, makes a connection between chamber music and noise that may not be apparent. Like sheets of skull-splitting noise, a cello and violin can be well-chosen weapons in the war to disrupt routine thinking, and point to deeper emotional ways to face what we face and feel what we feel. This is a collaboration that takes risks, and pushes boundaries, least of all those of us who were fans already of MONO and world’s end girlfriend’s work.
Listen, and wake up.
