New Orleans native Landry charts a demented yet sexy course through Noir with this release, a loose homage to all sorts of transgressive road activities. He manages to sound both world and otherworldly here, in tales of loss, violence, wandering and much boozing. In lesser hands, this could devolve into camp, but Landry knows his blues and country, and he can swing too. From “Poor Boy” to “Dixie” to “Coal Black Heaven” he knows his history and his people, and what they do to forget. Perfect for the car with a couple of road sodas, or for the la-z-boy with a bottle and exes in your head, Landry’s ballads and rockers will please anyone who has ever been yelled at by Jerry Lee Lewis at a show, or been stood up at same by George Jones.
