Paganize take us back to around 1982, and that is not a bad thing. Not a nostaliga act, though they can sound it at times, the band plays a classic 80's metal style, which at its best recalls Maiden and Priest, and at its worst Grim Reaper. Call Norway’s Paganize a kind of semi-prog Saxon: ponderous tunes with glossy classic riffs, with vocals that plead and croon rather than growling for cookies. “Turn of the Tide,” “The Wraith,” and “Divinity in Vain” sure sound familiar, but in an earnest, not derivative way. It is all a matter of taste. Bands that can’t decide whether to just rock or rock with SERIOUSNESS (see King’s X) usually trip themselves up; I expect that to happen with this band too, but later. For now, this is a fun if slight ride, and a nice breather, at least in style, from fear-me-or-I’ll-growl-even-louder crews.
