Obscurus play old school metal, overlaid with black metal trappings. The monster riffs are bluesy, and the bass lines have classic rock written all over them. Not too shabby, and there is even a concept here for your meditation and brooding. The seven songs here lumber along a trail well-trodden: the world is bleak and dying, and there (lean closer) may be an evil presence afoot. That said, “Bounded Artifact,” “Verbia Daemonicus,” “To the Bone” and “Blooming disaster” are not sunk by the demonic posturing. Hell, (no pun intended) “Tale of a Scorched Earth” should make any honest metal playlist.
This set by members of Wolfe and Temple of Baal rocks and groans, and despite its lyrical shortcoming, is a fun and brutal listen. Never underestimate the power of bludgeoning to overcome faults. Right, neo-cons?
