Syrian legend Souleyman is one manic performer. This set culled from live shows recorded on cassette feature a sweaty stew of regional music and odd bits of bastardized pop and dance. Abrasive and aggressive fun is had by all, if you tolerate it. This is the kind of music that at first listen is kinda foreign, kinda familiar, and you can certainly understand it at a visceral level. The frenzied vocals, reminiscent of a cross between a Muslim call to prayer and B-Real, may be a turnoff at first. The repetition of tones in Middle Eastern music can be pretty grating after awhile, even with pop and funk spices.
It doesn’t matter that you can’t understand the words to “Alkhatiba Zaffouha” or, beyond the title, “Don’t Wear Black, Green Suits You Better.” The emotional and the raw spirit of the tracks attest to this being a throw-down from a true artist and a great showman.
