Nice 2 CD representative set of work by Detroit’s Brovold, and the over 40 + musicians who have been in and out of the band over the last seven years. The first disc is a new recording, featuring the kind of heady mix of soft drone and screeching guitar/horn attack that has made Larval one of the best post/no rock bands of the last decade. Highlights include “Surviving Death,” “The 300-Pound Nurse” and “It Was a Puny Plan.”
The truly jaw-dropping set is on the second disc, featuring performances from throughout the band’s history. Live, this is a mighty mighty, barbaric yawp, and tracks like “Childish Delusions” and “Crippled Dance,” tracks that might give old Big Black fans a momentary jolt of nostalgia. The cover of Rhys Chatham’s “Guitar Trio” while slightly reverent, still allows the band to assert itself.
