“Step On Inside, If You’re Up For The Ride” The self-titled debut by Vietnam, although familiar, seems to put the pieces together in a way that hasn’t been done to this point. With the image and lyrical content of four Vietnam vets that found some guitars and alcohol instead of open doors when they got back to the world and Dylan vocals topped with Kings of Leon’s retro-arrangements, the experience feels dirty but invigorating at the same time. The guitars vary from the dreamy strolling sound on “Apocalypse”, “Step On Inside”, and “Too Tired” to frantic and powerful like “Welcome To My Room” and “Gabe”. I would suggest seeing Vietnam live first, if possible, to fully experience the energy that goes into their stage show. It helped me appreciate the LP more in the end with the extra production and the addition of some very welcome horns.
