It doesn't seem like it has been over 2 years since James Murphy dropped the very successful self-titled LCD Soundsystem album, but it has. This time out Murphy takes a much less punk (never thought that was appropriate anyway) approach and adds more dance elements. Sound of Silver seems like a more mature effort indeed. The 8 minute opus, "Us vs. Them" encapsulates the whole LCD Soundsystem vibe. It's more like Jam Band electronica rather than Dance-punk. James hits a groove and drives it all the way home without letting up.
Murphy has a little bit of fun with talking about the difference between being from North American and Europe in "North American Scum", sometimes tongue-in-check and other times pretty blatant. I would say that "All My Friends" is the best track on Sound of Silver. It has a hypnotic and repetitive keyboard line but it's James' vocals that really push this song. If you had to pick a "punk" element on the album it might be the vocals on "Watch The Tapes". But that would be stretching it too. The title track wasn't really a high point. It didn't have the high energy like some of the other tracks on the album. I thought the album would have felt much more complete without the finale, "New York I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down".
He still hasn't got it perfected yet but then again, who has. Sound of Silver is one of the great albums of 2007. Check it out.

Anyone heard Sound of Silver yet? Is it really worth the hype? I'm trying to decide if I should actually pick it up.
