Austin’s Golden Bear update good old-fashioned Brit Power-Pop, but of the hard, literate sort that places them in sonic company with The Who, Kinks, and early Bowie. It is always welcome to be reminded of how great this sound is when done well and given a fresh update. “Reason to Be Proud” and “Santa Rosa”, among just about every other track, would be equally sensible as part of “The Who Sing My Generation or “Tim.”
The daring but successful addition of strings and the Royal Forest Horns give even more soul to the disc. Power Chords, vocals and beats that arrive in your face as if delivered by someone convinced he is gonna live forever, Golden Bear grab their sound by the balls and sweep you up in the same glorious sonic net. Live for once, dammit, and go see the Bear on the road this Spring.
