I am not sure why I missed out on Po' Girl's debut album, Vagabond Lullabies. I had it sitting in my massive piles of CDs for years until it just disappeared in the abyss that some CDs seem to do. Anyway, here I am, listening to Home To You, their sophomore album and am wishing that I did take the time to listen to their first. Po' Girl started out with two room-mates playing some roots music in their apartment (Trish Klein of The Be Good Tanyas and Allison Davies). They grew into a full on band and were signed to Nettwerk. This album seems to recapture that homey feeling. It seems like a bunch of friends getting together to play some old favorites. That's how comfortable this album really is. With a name like Po' Girl, you have to know that you are getting roots music here. The neat thing with these girls is that the music reaches out into pop and soul for inspiration as well. While sometimes the music does border on tedium ("Green Apples") there is enough substance to enjoy. The opening track, "Skies Of Grey", really gives you an idea of what Po' Girl is capable. If you are a fan of Trish's Be Good Tanyas, there is no reason why you couldn't get into Po' Girl. If you like Ani DiFranco then you should try out Home To You. It's not as loud as Ani likes to get but it has the same vibe.
