We Are Pilots had been sitting in my review pile for quite some time then I picked up an issue of Alternative Press with something like "don't miss Shiny Toy Guns"... So I put it on and remembered why I hate Alternative Press. They can't be counted on for anything.

Shiny Toy Guns is a pop band who want to be something more. But damn, their music is so glossy that you can't even sink your teeth into it. Add some edge guys. Chad Petree needs to lay off the damn falsetto. It just gets annoying. Some of the songs are half decently written and do actually contain a pop hook but it's hidden so far under the slick production that all is lost. And people, what the hell is "When They Came For Us"? It just sounds like a dream about pop music gone bad. It is too summery and happy for anyone (read: It's cheesy as a bag of cheetos). I don't mind the songs ("Jackie Will Save Me") where Carah Faye sing but again there are too many samples and things to take away from the quality of her voice. My advice to Carah, start your own project.

Sorry, I've already wasted too many words on We Are Pilots. Stay away from this. It's ridiculous. Shit like this makes me angry. I need to go cleanse my ears.

In the world of electronic pop, I believe that Shiny Toy Guns has gotten it right. Although they don't caste much originality in their act, they are definitely a band that has caught my attention and We Are Pilots is their best example of the type of work they can produce. Overall, Shiny Toy Guns could take some lyrical lessons but as far as an electronic/dance/pop album goes, this is about as good as it gets.

The album starts off strong with their track "You are the One" on a note of heavy synth keyboard and electronic drums. In this song one can see their knack of vamping on the same note, which gets a bit monotonous in the verse until the pre-chorus which provides a well thought-out melody before the chorus who's melody is epic and shows the extent of Chad Petree's vocal range. Le disko is in next on the album which shows off a bit of Carah Faye's vocal skills. She is clearly the most talented of the two vocalists in the group but she shows it modestly in Le Disko which is primarily a dance song similar to any pop song you'd hear in a club.

The rest of the songs, specifically "Don't Cry Out", "Starts With One", "Chemistry of a Car Crash", and "Rainy Monday" have a similar sound to "You are the One" which limits Shiny Toy Guns in their creativity. The track "When They Came For Us" is also of particular interest in that it seems to be about a robotic overtaking of earth and sounds like an ambient children's song.

The bottom line is, if you like one of the songs on the album, you'll like a majority of the album due to its similarities and lack of originality, but it is definitely an album that is worth a listen if you are into music resembling Mates of State and The Birthday Massacre. Otherwise, take a raincheck.

This album was definitley not great. But the girls voice is amazing. Also, Don't Cry Out is an amazing song. I really, really, really like it for some odd reason.
