This trio knows their way around an improv. With one spiritual foot in Big Black, and the other in Miles Davis’ mid-70’s electric shows in Japan, Stinking Liz are brutal and sublime. Produced by Albini himself, “Scream” is blast of virtuosity where no note is wasted. Walking the line between no-wave and pure assault is a dangerous one, but one listen to the raw but restrained mayhem of “Willie Nelson(Tired of the War)” or “Secrets of the Past” and you know you are in the hands of a band that knows their Pete Cosey, Glenn Branca and their Blue Cheer.
This is smart and stomping rock that goes out on a limb in every chorus, but stays true to its own internal engine. Zappa would have been as proud as Miles.
