Less Than Jake is a ska/punk band hailing from Gainsville, Florida. But on the latest attempt, they seem to stray from the sound that has made them a crowd favorite, and most of the songs on In With The Out Crowd are super radio friendly, and very pop-ish. Songs like "Overrated(Everything Is) are very ironic, the lyrics rag on being on the radio and how selling out is overrated, which seems strange because to die hard LTJ fans, thats exactly what the band has done.
In between the songs about heart break and self guilt, i.e. "Rest Of My Life", it is easy to tell that the guys have matured in extreme amounts. It's not a bad thing, but again, die hard fans will disregard everything that the band is trying to say and label them just another band that had amazing talent but seemed to have sold out. I completly disagree. Gone are the heavy horn sections and the lyrics about getting drunk and smoking your last cigarette, and they are replaced with well thought out lyrics by a man that is nothing less than a poet. And who knew the band could actually play their instruments?
If you have been a long time fan who has been left with a bad taste in your mouth upon your first listen, or are just stumbling upon these icons in musical history, I beg of you to listen to the album and appriciate what the band is trying to say. Everyone has to grow up sometime.
