As far as I can tell, this four track, self titled EP is the debut release from The Always Already. It is difficult to review a record that’s only fourteen minutes long, and even more difficult when said album isn’t even one of those punk CD’s with eleven tracks averaging a minute and ten seconds apiece, but here I am, taking a stab at it. The Always Already play a darkly likeable post punk reminiscent of most Canadian bands you’re currently listening to, with a healthy dose of British new wave of the non Joy Division variety. Heavy, keyboard oriented riffs and vaguely late seventies guitar chord progressions surrounded by yelping vocals that inexplicably call to mind scenes from the movie version of George Orwell’s 1984 are pleasantly layered over dance beats, with each song possessing its own degree of gloomy, English sounding weirdness. The vocalist even sings with a British accent. The outcome is sort of what would happen if Interpol and Bloc Party had a love child, and oddly enough, this music is easier to listen to than either of the aforementioned trendsetters. Easily my favorite is the last song on the EP, “I Am Electric,” though each of the other songs has a certain amount of enjoyment to offer. My only real complaint is that the songs all sound a bit too similar, making the CD run together into one or two long songs. That shouldn’t be a problem in the future though; the band is clearly on the new side and has plenty of time to work out the kinks before it comes time to gather up a following.
