Dance punk. It sounds so last year, but with the much finer releases from !!! and LCD Soundsystem are about to make 2007 the year that Dance Punk took over the world. Maybe not, but regardless we have a decent release from !!! (Chik Chik Chik) this year called Myth Takes. It has a lot of great diversity in it so you don't get bored of their groove ladened songs.

Myth Takes jumps right into the rhythm-driven music with the title track. It has a little spaghetti western feel to it, mixed with some film noir darkness. Then the guys start into "All My Heroes Are Weirdos", a loud track, a little more along the lines that we have come to expect from !!!. "Must Be The Moon" follows this path, featuring a hard driving beat, drop out instrumentation when the vocals are in play. "A New Name" could be a modern day Clash song. A definite single potential here. That goes along with "Heart of Hearts". It wouldn't be a far cry to hear this song in a club, without even having to be remixed. That's one of the attractions of !!!, they are able to create fun dance beats with great rock sensibilities. The one page that came with Myth Takes mentioned Primal Scream and I can't help but feel that on songs like "Heart Of Hearts". The ability to play normal rock instruments (mixed with samples) to make some great dance-able music.

One of the best tracks on the album is the groove heavy "Bend Over Beethoven", !!! find's the rhythm and goes with it. It almost gets overwhelming but damn, it's catchy. And to give even more diversity, the group closes on a bit of a ballad called "Infinifold", an interesting play with falsettos, piano and other samples and instruments.

Again, I don't think this is going to be enough to bring back the promise of dance punk as a bona-fide genre but it is enough to have a good time too.
