German's is a Toronto based Rock/Pop band who's sound resembles a mix between Weezer and Modest Mouse (which is a band they took influence from). Rounded out with fun and catchy pop-rock songs, Cape Fear is a great debut for this new band. Opening with one of their best songs, "Tiger Vacuum Bottle" is a fantastic showcase of the band's instrumentation and songwriting skills. The guitars are always impressive and the whole recorded feels seemlessly balanced. The songs on the album are very hooky, with each one usually having something distinct about them. "Nature's Mouth's" semi-a cappella outro is a highlight of the album and "Franchise", this reviewer's favorite song off the album, benefits from sounding like a Modest Mouse song off Lonesome Crowded West. The band also dips into the use of synthesizers on some songs. This greatly benefits song like "No Job" which wouldn't be much without these effects. There are some flaws with the record however. As a pop/rock album, some of the songs feel repetitive, and used. "So It's Out" is the worst song on the album solely because it sounds like other songs on the album and it becomes boring. The album really only sort of has one jump-out-of-your-seats-in-a-fit-of-happiness song. And the album is consistent and catchy, but some songs feel light and shallow. But overall, this is a great debut and people should watch out for these guys. It's a fun little record with some great songs that sound like sweet, sweet B-sides to The Green Album.
