I swear I had to keep checking the artist on this album. This is not the Aereogramme that I knew. They've changed drastically. Gone is the edgy sounds of their lovely Matador album, Sleep And Release. It may have to do with Craig's throat infection that pretty much put the band on hold. Instead of barking out songs, Craig has turned into a crooner and in all honesty, quite a good one too. My review of My Heart Has A Wish That You Would Not Go is much delayed due to me getting over the loss of the previous Aereogramme. I threw this album on the minute it crossed my desk but it just ended up in the dreaded pile. Now that I've revisited the album I've found merits in the much mellower sound.
The songs are lush with intricate arrangements in all of them. Craig's voice is soft and very Adult Oriented but the music is too complex for that. Think of the band Live without the loudness and you might be able to imagine where Aereogramme now sits. Songs like the beautiful "Living Backward" really guide the listener through a lush landscape of of sounds, as it builds to probably the loudest moment on the album. I would imagine that Irish band The Frames would love to put out an album that is this complex while remaining quite mellow. That is the difference here, this album holds your attention with it's diversity even though the music is still fairly laid back.
Get over your dismissal of Aereogramme's former sound and you might actually be able to get into this album. It is very different but a welcome sound just the same.
