No serious music site would review a Hayseed Dixie album. Well, ME sure ain't serious and you know what? Hayseed Dixie are good as the next novelty act. What better way to listen to old metal and rock classics than with banjo and accapella vocals. Maybe bluegrass thrown in for good measure. If you have never heard this band you should just check out a track or two and see for yourself. They started out as a novelty act issuing a "Hillbilly Tribute To AC/DC" and that was back in 2001. They've also done one on Kiss and one on Mountain Love.
This time around on A Hot Piece Of Grass the hillbillies are giving us a nice variety of songs, starting with Led Zeppelin's "Black Dog" with some killer banjo playing (think that's good banjo, wait until they provide us with a super fast "Dueling Banjos" to close the album). One of the more comical arrangements (yeah, they are metal songs being covered bluegrass style. They are all comical) is their version of "War Pigs". A surprise here is the choice of a Green Day song, "Holiday", probably the weakest of the set. They follow this up with "Whole Lotta Love", "Whole Lotta Rosie", and "Running With The Devil" until they start hitting on some originals. Sure, the first half of the album is campy but the second half showcases some decent country songwriting. Hayseed Dixie may just surprise us one day and release an album of all original material. It's like a cover band finding their own.
A Hot Piece of Grass is far from essential but if you like pulling out the odd song to tease your friends with, Hayseed Dixie have what you need.
