Why do people have such adversions to the term “Emo? It’s just a name anyway. Right now there are plenty of bands that fit into the Emotional Hardcore (original meaning of the genre) that are getting super press and recognition that they deserve. The Anniversary is not an emo band. Not at all. They may be labelmates with emo kings The Get Up Kids but that’s pretty much where the comparison ends. The Anniversary is way too upbeat and jangly to ever fit into the emo arena. Not only do they implement jangly guitars better than most pop bands out there but they also use a female back-up vocalist as well as a (gasp) keyboard. There is enough pop rock here to blow a hole in the ozone. The Anniversary crafts some bloody amazing songs that stick in you head for ages after the listening was completed. The songs aren’t all juicy sweet, they introduce a few darker moments like on “The Death of the King. All in all the Anniversary prove that they don’t need to fit into any genre to produce high quality music.
