Jack Harlan seems like a gentle human. His songs are quiet and well spoken as well as superbly arranged. Jack is a Calgary born musician who decided to move out to Vancouver to allow more to hear his folky songs. It obviously worked because he got signed up to Vancouver based Nettwerk Records, home to Sarah McLachlan. Harlan took his time when it came to record Carnival of Mystery. Three years to be precise. He realized that his song writing style is simple and that the studio is where he would shine. He has done a great job. His songs are dark and some of them depressing but that’s not hard to imagine seeing that he is an embalmer by trade. I can’t even pull out a favorite but I will tell you that Harlan starts out with “Breath of Heaven and sets the bar pretty high for himself. That doesn’t faze him because he’s got this thing down and the entire album is wonderful. He just needs to get out to support the album.
