The National reached a much larger audience than they were used to with their critically acclaimed Alligator. All eyes were on them for the follow-up, could they better that amazing album? I am going out on a limb to say yes, The guys in National have made their career topping album with Boxer. It takes a couple listens for one to realize but after that there is no denying it's charm. If you could fuse Interpol (coincidentally produced by Peter Katis who also did Interpol and Spoon) onto the Shins you might end up with something resembling The National.

If you are looking for quick proof that this album is for you, check out "Mistaken For Strangers", an infectingly beautiful upbeat song that is calling out to be the best track this year. Sure, this is the first one that sticks out as a great track but give the rest of the album a go and I think you may agree with me with this being one of the best albums this year.

Listen to "Apartment Story" more than once and it will be permanently etched into your mind. On 'Squalor Victoria' I think of The Walkmen in bed with Joy Division. It's a weird combo The National have but it sure works to create some lovely songs.

Boxer is filled with some very fine songwriting. The National tends to be a little moody but they sure know how to write a catchy song. I foresee myself reaching for Boxer again and again, even years from now.
