I have heard Corey Harris before but I was not ready for what lay ahead on the Downhome Sophisticate album. This album is more diverse than 95% of all blues albums out there. Have a listen to the awesome reggae of “Sista Rose fade into the total lounge feel of “Black Maria with almost a tango feel. Hell, Corey Harris even tries his hand at hip hop on the album’s bonus track. Did I mention that this “blues album has a bonus track? That should let you in on how hip Corey really is. Harris dives into Ben Harper territory with a few moody tracks that sound like Harper’s best work. There is plenty of Blues on this album too. Listen to the way that Corey gets the beat rolling with the cool “Money On My Mind which looks harmless from the outside. The album smoothly moves into “Keep Your Lamp Trimmed and Burning which is a very raw and rough track in the vein of North Mississippi All-Stars. Harris has really outdone himself on Downhome Sophisticate hitting on all styles of black music possible. This album is a great introduction to the artist as well as a easy way to get into the blues.
