A new Queens of the Stone Age is always reason to celebrate. And I have to start off this review by stating that Era Vulgaris is my least favorite Queens album to date. Before you run off, I still think it is a very decent album and I do believe that this thing could easily grow on me. What's missing from Era Vulgaris is the catchy pop elements that have been on the last few albums. It seems that Josh Homme possibly is running out of ideas. Songs like "I'm Designer" just seem to be overly repetitious. I also found "Battery Acid" to be corrosive and not in a good way.
One song I really enjoyed is the laid back - almost blues-y - "Make It Wit Chu". It had a classic feel to it, bordering on Motown sound. Even "Suture Up Your Future" has some redeeming qualities but once again, lacking the instant appeal that previous albums had so much of. The best song of the set is easily "3's & 7's". It's upbeat and has an awesome bridge and some great groove going for it. Put this one on your summer mix-tape. It's not "No One Knows" but pretty decent just the same.
I struggled with this review because I really wanted to love Era Vulgaris. While most of the songs are tight and different the missing hooks just left me out hanging. No memorable songs to be found. I may change my opinion if I choose to spend some more time with Era but there are just so many great albums out this year that it is hard to warrant. Let's hope that Josh is able to remedy this on his next album, if there is another Queens of the Stone Age album.

While the review is nicely done, I disagree and think Era is an instantly gripping affair that is full of classic QOTSA songs. I say classic because, more than anything this album brings me back to the days of "Rated R", when the music had more in common with Josh's Kyuss roots than it did with anything else. Of course the album has it's fair share of influences, from punk to glam to sleaze, but at it's heart you feel Homme has not forgotten where it is he came from. Oh, and the triple-kill of tracks "Turnin' On The Screw", "Suture Up Your Future" and "River In The Road"...totally worth the price of admission alone.

Agree whole heartedly with this review. Era Vulgaris just did not grip me as previous albums have done. I must admit it has grown on me since it's release, the initial negative reaction dissolved (simply perhaps because I expected another Songs For The Deaf; fun, addictive riffs and altogether catchy tunes) but the truth is no QotSA album is the same. It may not have had a lasting impact on me, but it hardly disappoints.
