Alvin has made leaps and strides in a new blues direction. Comparing this album to Big Mama's Door one finds that he has more or less abandoned the acoustic guitar. Not a bad thing but I miss it a bit. One track, "Porch Monkeys Theme", sounds like he has been listening to Medeski, Martin and Wood with it's totally funky feel. With "Electric Eel" Alvin take some tips from Ben Harper with the slinky feel he pulls off. He has pushed aside the normal boundaries that blues has and opened the door wide open. He won may awards for his last album, Territory, and I am sure he is going to easily follow that up here with Start With The Soul.
