This record would not be fun at parties, especially near the end of parties where even those who got laid are suddenly hip to the futility of it all. Regret, loss, obviously bad drugs and nightmares are the meat for the this band, and they manage to deliver some genuine sad-sack existential thrills.
Piano, understated guitar and the eerie, wounded vocals of one Freddy Bale make this a raw experience made all the more chilling by the lo-fi, of-kilter delivery. You know you are listening to stories that someone really did experience, and lived to rave on about them. "The Discarded," "With a Smile in a Suit," " The Din Forgotten;" you can’t fake these, and the dreamlike, slightly Weimar-vibe makes it all the more seamy. A winner, if you can safely keep your distance.
