The A Calculated Use of Sound EP is a view of Protest the Hero’s earlier work, which is more punk influenced and less refined. Rody’s voice is a definite difference, more high, shrill, and relatively unpleasant to listen to. The subject matter on the album is different, also, forcing itself into more political and controversial niches. Fear and Loathing in Laramie, about the gruesome hate crime killing of Matthew Shepard, and These Colors Don’t Run, a powerful song about the Bush administration and terrorism. Protest the Hero show off their definite skill in this EP, and their ability to take on issues, but they don’t seem to work as a whole until Kezia.
