I've been following Damien Jurado's career pretty much since I received his Rehearsals For Departure for review back in 1999. He's one of those artists who you don't really stand up and shout your love for. Instead, he's the type that creeps in and out of your life, not really making a huge impression but making his stays enjoyable. That's a good relationship to have when it comes to singer/songwriter material.

And Now That I'm In Your Shadow is Jurado's third full-length for Secretly Canadian, a label that prides itself on the wholesome music it fosters. It would seem that Damien has taken a couple of cues from the love-able M Ward for the recording of this one. The album starts out with a lovely track called "Hoquiam". A guitar, and a cello accompany Damien's road weary voice. "Denton TX" is a very rootsy track showing another side of the man, with Jenna Conrad playing Emmylou to Jurado's Gram. Conrad is also present on 'What Were The Chances", a song that seems like it might end up cheesy with the drum machine but ended up winning me over.

It is a sparse record with hardly any percussion to talk about. For instance, if a strong wind came up "Gas Station" would easily blow away with just its vocals and gentle acoustic guitar. This translates to one of Jurado's strongest releases to date. His story-telling has improved over his prolific career (the man has put out 8 full-lengths in his decade long existence).
